Tooth Whitening Treatment

Tooth whitening is one of the most sought-after dental treatments across the world. In this treatment, discolored, stained, and yellow teeth are bleached to give you back your natural, bright, prearly-white smile. It is a non-invasive treatment that can give you a whiter smile almost instantly.

Different Kinds Of Tooth Whitening

There are various toothpastes available in the market which can reduce discoloration from your teeth. These toothpastes require you to use them regularly to maintain the result. There are similar, but stronger formulas available in the form of gels and strips. These tooth bleaching formulas contain small doses of abrasive ingredients like silica, hydrogen peroxide, carbamide peroxide, pyrophosphates, etc. These treatments are usually safe for use as long as you use them only as directed in the label or by a physician. However, they cannot work if there are hard stains on the teeth or the discoloration is truly severe. This is when you can seek in-office treatment at a clinic.

Teeth Whitening At Trident Dental Clinic

If you have tough stains on your teeth resulting from years of coffee or wine intake, advanced age, tobacco use, etc. it is best that you opt for professional teeth whitening. Here’s how the treatment goes:

  1. First, your cheeks will be retracted so that the doctor can easily see and access all your teeth that require whitening.
  2. Your gums will be covered with liquid rubber or resin to protect it from the abrasive chemical.
  3. A bleaching gel with a high concentration of active hydrogen peroxide is applied to your teeth. The oxygen in the formula breaks down the stains and lightens the teeth’s color.
  4. This gel stays on for 15 to 30  minutes and then is washed off.
  5. The doctor checks how far the teeth have whitened and repeats the process a few times until you have pearly white teeth.
  6. The same thing is repeated a second time.
  7. After the last gel application, they remove the cheek retractors and you are asked to rinse your mouth.
  8. Initially, you will see a brighter shade that is whiter than the new true colors. It will settle down in a day or two.

Is Tooth Whitening Safe?

Yes, teeth whitening is absolutely safe as long as it is done by a certified dentist. A dental clinic is well-equipped to manage any risk of mishaps that might occur. However, the procedure involves use of highly concentrated products that can be easily mishandled, leading to health hazards, if you try it at home.

Is Tooth Whitening Permanent?

Tooth whitening gives long-lasting results. But the results are not permanent. Your teeth will still stay susceptible to gradual staining as you consume colored food every day. If your teeth are excessively exposed to hard colors like coffee, tea, etc. they will stain faster. You can prevent it by maintaining good oral hygiene, using teeth whitening toothpastes, and minimizing intake of color-rich food items. However, you can take the same tooth whitening treatment again after one year if you wish to!
